Jawa - New Zealnd

Built in New Zealand, this 30 x 8ft (300sq/ft) epic tiny house was built to 80% completion over a really fun two-week workshop (six crew plus 16 participants). Jawa is currently being completed and will soon to be occupied by its' fantastic owners in the Bay of Plenty.

We love these building workshops! Bringing together like-minded people for a common goal is rewarding on so many levels. Making friends and sharing the experience of building (rather than consuming) can be life-changing for some.  The real take-away for most of the participants is the community aspect of the build, which we nourish and encourage with laughter,  fun, and creating space to talk about dreams together. 

The design

Personally, this is one of the designs I am most proud of.  The impact of the angled walls could not be felt by the 3D renders, but when we got to experience them in-person they created an amazing illusion of space. Two meters of additional floor space was created in the lofts at each end (which saved $$ on the trailer size), the couch and lofts by design had built-in back rests without requiring extra pillows, and the bathroom felt bigger and more glamorous because the wall was away from your eye-line.

materials

The New Zealand native timbers are so beautiful, sourced from Fred the wood-mill neighbour (Carters Saw Mill) and installed with so much love. The timbers in this tiny are: oak floors, macrocarpa studs and structural timbers, redwood siding, interior trim, stair treads and countertop, and poplar ceiling. We used 100% wool insulation from Green Sheep (in the same valley). The client sourced salvaged double-pane aluminum windows and doors from Trade Me (NZ's version of craigslist or Gumtree). And even the trailer was bought locally, from Bay Engineering.
